The Beauchamp Addiction Recovery Center (BARC) Research Fellows Program

Baylor University and the BARC seek to advance the well-being of students through a multifaceted program that reflects the university’s values as a Christian community where wholeness, spiritual growth and academic success are priorities. The BARC is designed to support students in recovery from substance and behavioral addictions through multiple levels of support. We believe in supporting students academically and in all areas of wellness: socially, emotionally, spiritually, and physically. Through well rounded programs and support and by encouraging academic excellence, we aim to reach our goal of increasing positive recovery outcomes for every one of our students. Addiction disorders that we provide support for include alcohol and substance use disorders as well as process addictions including gambling, gaming, self-harm, sex or pornography, eating disorders and more. Some of our students identify primarily as in mental health recovery that requires abstinence from substances and are still a valued part of our community. We also work with students secondarily affected by alcohol and substance use disorder in their families or friends.

As part of the work of the BARC, the programs collect data that is anonymous and provides guidance for programming in order to serve our students more effectively.   To that end, the BARC Research Fellows would be scholars with interest and experience in substance use, recovery, and addiction research who would participate in compelling and ethical research focused on addiction and recovery.

BARC Research Fellows are faculty from diverse disciplines who volunteer or have departmental support to work with us in the creation of compelling research related to addiction and related behaviors. With approval from the BARC Director, and the university institutional review board as needed, the Fellows would be able to collaborate, initiate and design research, assist in the collection and analysis of data, as well as disseminate their findings to relevant stakeholders, policymakers, and peer-reviewed research outlets.
